Hall of mirrors

Composed in 2016

For violin and viola

Duration: 3:00

Martin Bresnick once told me that the program note should never be longer than the piece itself. With that in mind, let me say only a brief word about Hall of Mirrors. I am most drawn to music that not only packs an emotional wallop, but also is governed by some underlying structural principle. Hall of Mirrors is based on a simple premise that was very difficult to carry out compositionally. To make that principle work, I composed the piece from both ends, and at times worked my way out from the center. When you hear the piece, you might be able to figure out what the "game" is. All I will say is that it was a fun challenge to put this piece together. Hall of Mirrors was premiered in March 2016 in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and is dedicated to my friend and long-time collaborator, Nicholas Leh Baker.
